Craving the perfect, Authentic Guacamole Recipe? This simple, fresh, and flavorful guacamole is ready in minutes with just a few ingredients. Whether you’re enjoying it as a dip or using it to elevate your favorite dishes, this recipe is sure to impress!

Guacamole is a traditional Mexican dip made from ripe avocados mixed with fresh ingredients like lime, onion, tomato, and cilantro. Like Pico de Gallo (another staple, often paired with guacamole), it highlights how simple, fresh ingredients can create bold & delicious results.
I’ll never forget the joy of having table-side guacamole in Mexico, where the ingredients were mashed in a molcajete right in front of me. It was more than just a meal, it was an experience that deepened my appreciation for the art of making authentic guacamole!
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- Quick and easy: Ready in just 10 minutes with simple ingredients.
- Nutritious: It’s made with fresh, whole ingredients that are high in fiber, vitamins, minerals, and heart-healthy fats.
- Versatile: Enjoy as a dip, topping, or side for any Mexican-inspired meal
Guacamole Ingredients:

Here’s what you’ll need to make this simple yet flavorful guacamole:
- Ripe Avocados– large Hass avocados are best
- Red or White Onion– I prefer red onion for its milder flavor, but white onions are more traditional.
- Tomato– Seeded and diced.
- Jalapeño– Seeded and minced (adjust to your spice preference).
- Cilantro– Chopped (omit if you have the cilantro gene).
- Lime & Salt– Add these to your taste.
Pro Tip: use my jalapeño salt to elevate these flavors! Jalapeño salt truly shines in dishes that are not cooked.
How to Make It:

- Lightly crush the chopped onions, cilantro, jalapeno, salt, & lime juice.

- Add roughly chopped avocado.

- Mash to your desired consistency- smooth is ok, but chunky is better!

- Gently fold in chopped tomato, then taste & adjust for salt and lime.

- Serve & enjoy!
Recipe Tips
- Choose ripe avocados: The key to perfect guacamole is using ripe avocados. They should yield slightly to gentle pressure but not feel mushy.
- Adjust spice levels: If you like it mild, remove the seeds from the jalapeños, or skip them entirely. For extra heat, leave the seeds in!
- Lime is essential: Not only does lime add flavor, but it also helps prevent the guacamole from browning. Don’t skip it!
- For parties: If you’re making a large amount for parties, consider leaving out the cilantro and putting it on the side, or making two versions. Some of your guests might have the cilantro gene, and they will appreciate your thoughtfulness!
- Don’t over-mash: Smooth guacamole is usually associated with being store-bought. Still tasty, but it misses that authentic feel of being handmade in a molcajete. Chunky is better for texture!

How to Choose the Best Avocados:
Check the color: Ripe avocados usually have a darker, almost black skin with a bumpy texture. Avoid ones that are overly dark or have sunken spots.
Gently squeeze: A ripe avocado should yield slightly to gentle pressure without feeling mushy. If it’s too firm, it’s not ready yet; if it’s too soft, it may be overripe.
Pop the stem: If the little stem nub comes off easily and reveals green underneath, the avocado is ripe. If it’s brown, the inside may be browned or spoiled.
Plan ahead: If you’re shopping in advance, buy firmer avocados and let them ripen at room temperature. Once ripe, they can be stored in the fridge for 1–2 days to slow further ripening.

Storing
Guacamole is best served fresh, but if you need to store it, follow these tips to keep it looking and tasting great:
- Add some extra lime: The acidity from citrus juice can help to slow down oxidation, extending the shelf life.
- Cover tightly: Store your guacamole in an airtight container. Press plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the guacamole to minimize air exposure.
- Refrigerate: Guacamole can be kept in the fridge for up to 1-2 days. For best results, enjoy it as soon as possible!
Frequently Asked Questions
Hass avocados are the best choice for guacamole. They have a creamy texture and rich flavor when ripe. Look for dark, bumpy skin and gently squeeze to ensure they’re slightly soft but not mushy
Guacamole browns because of oxidation when exposed to air. To prevent this, add lime or lemon juice to help preserve its color, store it in an airtight container, with plastic wrap pressed directly onto the surface.
While fresh guacamole is always best, you can make it ahead of time but not by much. I’d recommend making it no more than 8 hours ahead of time for the best results, using the above tips to keep it as fresh as possible.

Authentic Guacamole Recipe
Ingredients
- 2 large Hass avocados
- 1 roma tomato, diced
- 3 tbsp red or white onion, chopped
- 2 tbsp cilantro, chopped
- 1 jalapeno, chopped
- 1 lime
- ¼ tsp salt
Instructions
- Lightly crush the chopped onions, cilantro, jalapeno, salt, & juice from 1 lime. If you do not have a molcajete (mortar and pestle), you can use a mixing bowl and a fork.
- Add roughly chopped avocado.
- Mash to your desired consistency. You can make it smooth if you prefer, but authentic guacamole has a chunky texture.
- Gently fold in chopped tomato. Taste & adjust for salt and lime, then serve and enjoy 🙂
Notes
- Choosing between red and white onion: Use red onion if you prefer a milder flavor that is slightly sweet. Use white onion for a sharper bite. I prefer red, but white is more traditional
- If making for a party or dinner guests: Consider putting the cilantro on the side, or making one bowl with cilantro and one without. Some people have a genetic aversion to cilantro, and your guests will appreciate your thoughtfulness!
- Storage: Guacamole is best served fresh, but it can keep in the fridge for no more than 2 days if stored properly!
