This is truly the best paloma cocktail recipe, coming from a former bartender! It’s made in a fresh & unique way, and it’s truly the BEST version I’ve ever tried. You only need 4 ingredients to make it!
This recipe is intended for those of legal drinking age. Please enjoy responsibly.

Before I became a recipe developer, I was a bartender for more than 12 years! The most popular tequila cocktails by far, were Palomas and the good old Classic Margarita.
Every bar makes their Palomas slightly different. Some use grapefruit sodas, while others used fresh grapefruit juice paired with club soda.
This Paloma cocktail recipe is unique, and it’s my favorite way to have them! It’s a very popular drink at my family functions, introduced to us through my Tio Roman. He absolutely LOVES a good cocktail made with tequila, and he has allowed me to share his unique recipe with you!
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
Fresh & Unique- this recipe muddles key limes with Himalayan salt to extract essential oils from the peel, adding complexity and a fragrant citrusy punch.
Perfectly Balanced- the flavors come together in a perfect harmony of bright citrus, subtle sweetness, and a touch of salty, bitter notes in the best way.
Crowd Pleaser- this drink is so good that even my dad & husband love it, and they both absolutely hate the taste of alcohol!
Ingredients in a Paloma

You only need 4 ingredients! Plus ice of course.
- Tequila- stick with your favorite blanco, or even a reposado if you prefer a higher quality cocktail. Tio Roman always uses El Jimador.
- Key Limes- these have a more intense, floral, and slightly sweeter acidity than regular limes, giving the Paloma a brighter and more aromatic flavor.
- Grapefruit Soda- Tio Roman is loyal to Squirt, but Jarritos is good too!
- Himalayan Salt– adds a subtle mineral note and enhances the overall flavor. It’s usually pink in color, but there are white Himalayan salts as well!
How to Make A Paloma:
Detailed instructions and ingredient measurements are provided in the recipe card below, but here is a brief overview of how to make a single-serving Paloma:

- Combine key limes and Himalayan salt in a shaker.

- Muddle until juices are released and salt is dissolved.

- Add tequila, ice, then shake vigorously for 5 seconds.

- Strain into a glass over fresh ice.

- Top with grapefruit soda, stir, and enjoy!
Pairing Suggestions
Whether you’re serving a casual meal or hosting a party, here are some fantastic dishes that pair wonderfully with Palomas:
- Tacos. Tequila + Tacos = the ultimate food and cocktail pairing! For the best taco recipes, I recommend trying my Beef Birria, Tequila Lime Shrimp, Authentic Carnitas, Carne Asada Tacos, and Tacos Al Pastor.
- Ceviche. You have to try my family’s Mexican Ceviche Recipe! The citrusy, light flavors of ceviche pair beautifully with a Paloma, creating a refreshing combination that is extra refreshing on warmer days.
- Enchiladas. One of the most popular recipes on my blog is Enchiladas Suizas (creamy green enchiladas). The tender chicken and creamy, savory sauce are well complemented by the zesty and refreshing flavors of a Paloma.
Frequently Asked Questions
The closest substitution for Himalayan salt is kosher salt, but there is a difference in flavor and I highly recommend the Himalayan salt! Both have a clean, pure flavor without additives like iodine.
Although there is nothing wrong with iodine, I do not recommend using table salt (which contains iodine), because it has a metallic, bitter taste that does not pair well with grapefruit which is already slightly bitter.
You can, but I do not prefer this version. Fresh grapefruit juice gives the Paloma a more natural flavor, but I feel that it lacks the authentic Paloma flavor that I’m used to.
To use fresh grapefruit juice instead of grapefruit soda, simply mix it with a little club soda.
Blanco (silver) tequila is typically preferred for a Paloma because of its light, crisp flavor that complements the citrusy notes. However, reposado tequila can also work if you prefer a richer, more aged flavor
Yes, here’s how:
– Only mix the key lime, salt, and tequila mixture in advance, and hold it in the fridge without ice. You don’t want to add the grapefruit soda until you’re ready to serve, because it will go flat.
– Be mindful of not muddling too deeply into the pith of the key limes, as this can cause the drink to get bitter over time. To be extra safe, you can juice the key limes in a separate glass first, then gently muddle the spent limes with salt before combining the remaining ingredients.

The BEST Paloma Cocktail Recipe (From a Former Bartender)
Equipment
Ingredients
- 2 oz tequila blanco, or reposado
- 2½ oz grapefruit soda, Jarritos or Squirt
- 2 key limes, rinsed and cut in half
- ¼ tsp Himalayan salt
- Tajin , or salt (optional for rim)
To make a large pitcher with 10 servings:
- 20 oz tequila blanco, 2½ cups
- 25 oz grapefruit soda, about 3 cups
- 20 key limes, rinsed and cut in half
- 2½ tsp Himalayan salt
Instructions
- If you'd like a Tajin or salt rim, run a lime wedge around the rim of your glass then dip the rim in Tajin or salt. Set the glass aside until ready to use.
- Combine key limes and Himalayan salt in a cocktail shaker or mason jar.
- Muddle until juices are released and salt is dissolved.
- Add tequila, ice, then shake vigorously for 5 seconds.
- Add fresh ice to your prepared glass, then strain the mixture over the fresh ice.
- Top with grapefruit soda, stir, and add a lime wheel or wedge for garnish (optional).
Notes
- If you can’t find grapefruit soda- you can use a mix of sprite and fresh grapefruit juice.
- Alternatively- you can mix club soda with fresh grapefruit juice and agave nectar or simple syrup.
- Don’t skip the key limes & salt- trust me, this really elevates the cocktail!
- Stir, do not shake the grapefruit soda! Shaking carbonated drinks will cause your shaker to bust open and make a mess. It also causes the soda to go flat faster.
- To make a large pitcher in advance- juice the key limes in a separate glass first, then gently muddle the spent limes with salt before combining with tequila and lime juice. Hold it in the fridge without ice, and don’t add the grapefruit soda until you’re ready to serve (it will go flat). Serve over fresh ice.
